Issues with four third-party docking stations for the Pinepone Pro

Last Updated on December 4, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

Comments of the YouTube video maker:

  • The battery is not charged to 100% while docked in my experience.
  • It hovers around 50%+ which is okay with me as long as it doesn’t die while docked.
  • I tried 3 different brands of USB-C to HDMI adapters with power delivery (PD)
  • I also tried a 4th one which is not shown in this video but it too works too.
  • If you don’t use a powered dock, the Pinephone Pro dies in just under an hour.
  • The original Pinephone has a convergence dock that is powered.
  • But you can’t use the convergence dock with the PPP.

I’m using Mobian with Phosh on an SD card.

  • Manjaro/Plasma Mobile is on the eMMC (not shown in this video).
  • I found Plasma to not be very good at handling external displays.
  • The settings would get screwed up or something would break and throw everything off.
  • The three brands I tried here all work.

Docks the YouTube video maker tested:

  1. Anker 7-in-1
  • not shown in the video, tested afterwards.
  • It works what exactly did he test
  • we suppose usb-c to HDMI and keyboard and mouse
  • but what about the other features.

2. TOTU 9-in-1 Type C

  • at 0:05 in the video
  • It has a card readers and ethernet (not tested)
  • power delivery is working
  • keyboard and mouse work

3. QGeeM 4-in-1

  • at 2:04 in the video
  • small, most wires come out in same direction.
  • Power delivery work
  • HDMI work
  • does not have a connector for wired ethernet

4. j5create

  • at 3:30 in the video
  • as mentioned above it works (what exactly)
  • this one is big/has ethernet but does not have card readers (ethernet not tested)
  • mouse works
  • keyboard works

The reviewers uses a Anker Nano II 65W power supply

  • He also showed a dock stand he made in 2 hours… it works for him

self-made dock stand

  • in 2 hours… it works for him
  • shown at 5:32 in the video self-made phone stand (poor design).

Issues with three usb-c docking stations tested by the MRIS

  • We already have tested 3 usb-c to HDMI adapters (the cheapest we found on Aliexpress) with the Pinephone.
  • HDMI out worked with none of them.
  • keyboard and mouse worked with one, we did not test this with the other ones.

issues for us personally with the adapters tested in the above video:

  • None of them is tested with the Pinephone, but only with the Pinephone Pro.
  • None of them was tested for wired ethernet.
  • Wired ethernet for the Pinephone is great, but tricky, and only runs with selected Pinephone distros.

It does not make sense to do stock market speculations with the adapters we mentioned here to make money out of us, we will not buy those because of the issues we described. None of those fits for our needs, since none of those was tested for wired ethernet with the PP or the PPP and has been proofen that this feature works.

We have here some adapter which “some features” which might work on “some distros”. And do the adapters also work with the PP? Other reported as we that some features do not work with cheap adapters. So is it not best to buy the docking bar from Pine64:

and document as good as possible what works and what does not work?
