091. Low-cost high-quality ECG & EEG devices which offer validation papers

Over the last three years we have evaluated on 397 pages ECG devices and on 597 EEG devices in our journal. From all of this information we selected two papers, and these are validation papers for OpenBCI ECG & EEG. The reasons to choose these two papers can be found in our journal» under the category “EEG” and “ECG”:

The two papers we have chosen are:

1. The validity and reliability of an open source biosensing board to quantify heart rate variability

https://www.cell.com/heliyon/pdf/S2405-8440(21)01251-2.pdf

published in “Heliyon”, in 2021 and cited 5 times to this date, the authors declare no conflict of interest. The authors of ther paper are from the University of Calgary in Canada and list an impressive list of research institutes they work in, and they have already published a second paper where they use OpenBCI ECG.

2. A Novel OpenBCI Framework for EEG-Based Neurophysiological Experiments

https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/23/7/3763

published in “Sensors” in 2023 and cited 5 times to this date, the authors declare no conflict of interest. The authors of the paper are from Columbia in South America.

For comparison the paper :

3. NeuroKit2: A Python toolbox for neurophysiological signal processing

https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/s13428-020-01516-y

which was published in “Behavior research methods” in 2021 has been cited 540 times to this date. The authors of the paper do not have a conflict of interest. NeuroKit2 is a contemporary neurophysiological software platform and is used in universities such as those from Singapore, Paris, New Zealand, and Pittsburg. NeuroKit2 offers similar multi sensor functionality than OpenBCI but has no valiation papers as OpenBCI has for ECG and EEG.

We selected the papers 1 and 2 with OpenBCI mentioned above for our evaluation which we performed over the last three years to find a physiological sensor device which is suitable for scientific studies. We haven’t used or tested OpenBCI products by ourselves to this date, but we think it is highly desirable that OpenBCI is further evaluated, tested but also used in scientific studies. To use OpenBCI with ECG and EEG for scientific is not yet as popular as for instance NeuroKit2 and the devices the software supports, but OpenBCI has validation papers for ECG and EEG which NeuroKit2 does not have. OpenBCI is validated in paper 1 and 2 mentioned above as a tool for 3 channel ECG gold standard heart rate measurements as well as a tool with up to 16 EEG channels to do neurophysiological research. And although neurokit2 is called a toolbox for neurophysiological signal processing it does not support EEG devices.
