To Increase the Accuracy of ECG Devices by Reducing Artifacts from ECG Electrode Cables

Last Updated on September 16, 2022 by pg@petergamma.org

An Accuracy study of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports in Magglingen showed that the Accuracy of a Holter ECG is lower during exercice than a Polar H10 chest strap:

A schematic of electrodes and HR chest strap placements on participant is shown in the paper. It shows, that the Holter ECG has long cables on the ECG electrodes. Is the innacuracy during exercice caused by these ECG electrode cables?

The Polar H10 chest strap has two electrodes, but they are very short. The Firstbeat Body Guard has also a very high accuracy, according to this table:

The Firstbeat Body Guard has only one ECG cable:

but in a reference study the device was tested only with activities up to 11 km/h.

The Adinstruments Equivital has two channels and as far as we know two electrodes. They are mounted on the sensor belt on the thorax with no cables.

The iWorx ROAM Wireless ECG device has also very short cables:

but we have not data about the accuracy of this evice during activity.

The g.tec support told as, that you can also choose to place ECG electrodes on thorax, rather on limbs. That would further minimize artefacts.
