Open Letter to Udo Berndt from smart-smart-live.net.de regarding connecting balenaHealth to Home Assistant over MQTT

Last Updated on January 24, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

Thank you for your great instruction on your YouTube channel smart-live.net, which we really appreciate.

We especially appreciate your guidance on the Apple Health Auto Export App and how we can visualize data in Home Assistant and InfluxDB. Librion Sobbers, the developer of the Apple Health Auto Export app has done many jobs:

We do not know if it is possible to visualize Stryd data and Apple sleep stages, which are also stored in Apple Health, on the path you describe. Unfortunately, Librion Sobbers does not respond to support requests.

However, we have found a new way that should make it possible to synchronize Apple heart rate from balenaHealth to Home Assistant via MQTT. We don’t know which parameters are all available via the Apple Health Auto Export. Aren’t they very limited?

We also believe it is possible to connect other Bluetooth Low Energy sensors to balenaHealth, such as the Stryd foot pod. We also think that this is possible with other sports sensors, such as treadmill speed sensors and peloton bikes, which could be connected to Home Assistant via MQTT. This means that the entire world of sports sensors, which can be developed using the THIS IS ANT+ SDK, for example, could also be connected to a new and modern platform such as Home Assistant.

I am a Swiss physiologist working on a private project who has written a 1000 page blog about it on my personal page:

This is a private project and I will not give any commissions or jobs to anyone, nor invest in it financially. But I have found that the blog, which mainly consists of things that I miss that are not published anywhere, is read by others, ideas are picked up by good programmers and converted into demos.

If you are looking for more ideas, I would like to suggest you to connect balenaHealth via MQTT to Home Assistant. This would connect the world of sports sensors to the world of home sensors via MQTT, which would be very desirable. We can imagine that there are many great projects that could be realized with sports sensors in Home Assistant.

Kind regards

Peter Gamma
