Cloud free solution to process office files on a Pinephone & on a PC

Last Updated on May 17, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

We where looking for a solution for this problem since a long time. The easiest and most handiest solution which we know which should work is the Pinephone

  • We suffer since a long time since Google removed the option to write to the external SD card from Android phones.
  • We suffer also, because it is not possible anymore to plug in an Android phone via usb and access the SD card via usb. This was previously possible, until Google removed this option.
  • Was it because Google wanted to sell Google cloud abos.
  • It was hard work for us personally to install Libre Office on the Pinephone:

  • The experienced Pinephone user alaraajavamma wrote in the Pinephone forum, that Abiword and Gnumeric work better with the Pinephone
  • These apps work better on the small Pinephone screen than Libre Office
  • We have installed Abiword and Gnumeric on our Pinephone, too.
  • We installed those apps alos on our Windows PC.
  • We have a Pinephone running postmarkedOS.
  • With postmarkedOS the Pinephone keyboard works fine out of the box, and the Pinephone keyboard offers also an power bank.
  • We tested 3 third party usb-c adapers for the Pinephone, but none of the worked.
  • The experienced Pinephone user alaraajavamma tested 15 usb-c adapers:

  • and most of them worked for her.
  • since all the thirt party usb-c adapter we did test did not work, an option for us would be to buy the official usb-c docking bar, which should work out of the box with postmarkedOS:

  • But we haven’t done this to this date, because of the high shipping costs and import taxes for Pinephone accessoires.
  • But another option is to write the files to the external SD card of the Pinephone. This should work with PostmarkedOS. This information can be found in one of our posts in the Pine64 forum.
  • We then can stick the SD card to our Windows or Linux PC and continue to work there.
  • Both Abiword and Gnumeric are available for Windows and PC, bugt the development of these apps has stopped since a longer period of time.
  • But for Pinephone users, as well as for SBC users, Abiword and Gnumeric are interesting alternatives to Libre Office, since these apps work great on small screens.
