Can we use the OpenBCI Galea or the Neurosity Crown for practicing meditation?

No. Practicing meditation means to turn our knowing conscious perception inwardly. The Galea Headset requires to turn our knowing conscious perception outwardly. Also the Neurosity Crown is not suitable for this purpose, since the Neurosity Crown app requires to turn our knowing conscious perception to the Neurosity app.

For practicing Shamatha meditation as taught for instance in Tibetan Buddism, we close our eyes completely. Therefore, both devices are not suitable for Shamatha meditation.

In Kundalin Yoga, we have the Tratakum Gazing Meditation, where we turn our knowing conscious perception outwardly and direct our gaze to a fixed point, for instance a candle:

But both as well the OpenBCI Galea as well as the Neurosity Crown do not offer a vizalisation of for instance a candle on the headset or on the app, an measure simultaneously our brainwaves.

We do not know exactly the electrode placement of the OpenBCI Galea and the Neurosity Crown, but since mediators are interested in high alpha waves and in gamma waves in the left prefrontal cortex, and the electrode placement of both devices does not fit with this requirements, both devices are not suitable for practicing mediation. The Neurocity Crown with 8 channels has also electrodes which are located at the back of the head, but meditators are mainly interested in alpha waves and gamma waves in the left prefrontal cortex.

The picture above shows Yogi Bhajan, and can be used to practice Tratakum Gazing Meditation as taught by Yogi Bhajan, and can be used to focus on it. For meditators who practice this kind of meditation, a special edition of EEG devices is required which shows this picture of Yogi Bhajan on the screen (no, no, we are only joking.)
