Osama bin Laden was a Saudi terrorist and the founder of the militant Islamist organization al-Qaeda.
He is considered the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, as well as other attacks such as the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa and the 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole. Born in 1957 in Riyadh to a wealthy family, he left his privileged life to join the mujahideen fighting against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. After the Soviet Union’s withdrawal, he founded al-Qaeda to wage a global jihad against the U.S. and its allies.
After the attacks, bin Laden became the world’s most wanted terrorist and lived in hiding for years, most recently under the protection of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
