Arguments against developments based on the ADS1299 chip by Texas Instruments

One of the most interesting modules of OpenBCI was for us personally the OpenBCI Wifi shield. But then it was not offered anymore by www.OpenBCI.com because it has reliability issues. These issues have been resolved. People who participated in the resolving of these issues where OpenBCI CEO Conor Russomanno and Neurosity CEO an computer scientist A. J. Keller. But after the issue resolving, www.OpenBCI.com did not offer an issue-free WIFI shield anymore in their shop. As far as we know Shirley Zhang from www.OpenBCI.com :

https://theorg.com/org/openbci/org-chart/shirley-zhang

is the responsible person for this project, which has not been realized to this date. Instead two new products have been launched, these are closed source projects as far as we know.

  1. The Neurosity Crown by comuter scientist A J Keller and Alex Castillo who does everything software at Neurosity
  • we suppose that Neurosity crown contains an OpenBCI Cyton module with a WIFI shield.
  • But the snake like architecture of the device does not fit our needs.
  1. The OpenBCI Galea by Conor Russomanno
  • The device offers 16 channels
  • It costs up to 25 000 USD
  • it is a device which does not fit to our needs either
  1. PiEEG Ildar Rakhmatulin
  • The introduction of the device comes very late after it has been published
  • An 8 channel device is still not available
  • It requires a Raspberry Pi
  • A recent development around Raspberry Pi is negative, and these are projects to go to the stock market with Raspberry Pi’s. This makes the product sensitive for speculations to make as much money out of it as possible.
  • And who knows if happens the same with Pi EEG?
  • The PiEEG would eventually be an interesting device to built up devices with for instance 32 channels by connecting 4 Pi’s with 4 PiEEGs:

https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?p=2178452#p2178452

  • But as soon as someone develops such a device, who knows that PiEEG will be linked to the costs of a g.tec multi-purpose devices with 32 channels which costs around 50 000 USD. ?
  • After all of this we come to the hypothesis that products based on the ADS1299 chip by Texas Instruments are stronlgy controlled by Texas Instruments or someone else, eventually with contracts which control every aspect of the device. When it will be introduced, to what costs, etc. As long as no one can convince us of the opposite, we suggest developers of EEG devices to build their devices on platforms like this:
  • We think for experimenting and learning the ADS1299 chip by Texas Instruments is still interesting also for us personally. But as soon as someone has the goal to develop his own product or write his own paper, we suggest to choose projects which are based on single electronic components and InfluxDB:
