Is Garmin floor climbing counting incaccurate?

Last Updated on February 6, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

What does Rob ter Horst says about this topic? Rob ter Horst tested the accuracy of 100 smartwatches. And also step counting accuracy. Why does he not test floor counting accuracy?

The Meditation Research Institute made some tests with the Garmin Fitness tracker dashboard today. We wanted to find out about the scientific value of the numbers which are indicated there.

We found out that it requires around one hour of walking meditation at a speed of around 3.4 km/h to get the required 5 000 steps which are needed to complete the training in the Garmin dashboard.

Today we made a test with stair climbing to get the required 10 floors. We counted the 10 floors we walked manually and with a Venu 2 and the protocol stairs climbing.

After we waked 10 floors, the stair climbing protocol showed 5 floors.

But then we synchronized our watch to Garmin Connect. And in the Garmin Connect dashboard it showed 10 floors.

What is wrong here?

There a discussion in the Garmin forum about stairs climing which involves also scientific papers:

But the thread has been locked there, and a poster has left the Garmin Forum.

Our account in the Garmin forum has been looked many times, and also those with other identities, since we where accused for spamming, which is wrong. We are not soft- and hardware developers, nor sellers.

If you are looked out of the Garmin Forum for the same reason, we invite you to continue the discussion in the comments below in our journal.

PS: The MRIS has already found where the problem is. In the statistics of Garmin Connect only floor climbing up is counted, and not floor downwards walking, there is where the fault was.
