St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square is one of the most impressive buildings in Rome, it is the largest basilica in the world, building started on April 18, 1506 and the building was opened on November 18, 1626:
On the orders of Emperor Nero, the Apostle Paul is said to have been crucified and buried in what is now the Vatican. In the 4th century, Emperor Constantine had a basilica called Old St. Peter built over the tomb of Peter. At the beginning of the 16th century, it was decided to build a new building due to its dilapidation. Numerous artists were involved in the construction, which lasted 120 years, including Raphael and Michelangelo. The project was financed with the so-called Peterspfennig and the sale of indulgences. The split in the church occurred at this time, because the indulgence for St. Peter’s Basilica was a reason for the Reformation.
