- This is the information from the DFRobot documentation and is dated from Sep 23 2020

- This topic has been discussed in the Chinese DFRobot forum, and the DFRobot documentation is basically a translation:

Why to choose Linux on the LattePanda V1?
- We have reviewed many SBCs in our journal
- there are SBC which are very power efficient has this comparison shows:
- There come again and again new SBC on the marked with new features, and we think it is worth to keep an eye on how they develop.
The LattePanda V1 was released 7 years ago
- But for our own special application it is not necessary to have the latest technology
- It can be an advantage to have an older device, since they draw less power
- Still it is desirable to have an ongoing development for the device of our choice
- This information is from Sep 23 2020 from DFRobot and needs to be digested, since the source of this information seem to be coders.
Advantages of Linux on the LattePanda V1
1) Is it worth to spend money for a Windows 10 licence for a single board computer, if the licence costs as much as the SBC itself?
2) The hardware of the LattePanda v1 is 7 years old, we therefore prefer to have a lightweight OS on the device, which runs smoothly, but Windows 10 is not lightweight.
Current Situation of running Linux on the LattePanda
When surfing the internet, we can discover the following information about running Linux on the LattePanda:
• Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
• OpenSUSE Leap 15.0, an instructional guide by J.S. Evans
• lattepanda-mainline-4.11
- not all features are supported by all distributions
In this context we are interested in the installation for Lubuntu on the LattePanda V1
- It is customized for Intel Cherry Trail CPU
- In this section we can also find the section for Setting the Default Output to HDMI, which we need for our application to use the LattePanda as a laptop as well
- It is difficult to have a cloud free access to data stored on SBC
- and who wants his data on a mobile server?
- A solution is to use only one single SBC for all application, and use the mobile device also for desktop’s
- This requires a mouse, a keyboard and a big computer screen and hdmi video out
In this section it is also discussed how to solve the touch panel drive problem
- But we think the instruction was written by a programmer and needs to be digested if we are non-coders
- But still this information here is of good quality and it is highly desirable if it would be taken over for instance by someone to flash it on a downloadable image.
recompiling the kernel for Atom X5 z8350 can improve performance a bit
- What makes the LattePanda V1 special is that it’s based off of an x86 CPU. It has a Intel Atom x5-Z8350.
- 4 cores, not very fast ones, but similar or better to what you’d find in a Raspberry Pi 4.
- Most single-board computers usually come with an ARM-based CPU.

Summary
- In the end, we installed Lunbutu 20.04 perfectly on the LattePanda, which solved the problems of:
- the BT
- Wifi
- Audio Output
- Touch Panel
- IGD which means integrated graphics device
- used the optimized kernel to improve the performance of the LP
If you have time, you can customize the ISO disc image file to be suitable for the LP, including:
• Turning off the default built-in output, and utilizing the HDMI output signal instead
• Give Docker support to and get better performance out of our optimized kernel
• Make a pre-installed touch screen driver
• Change io scheduling and add more file system support
• Pre-install the SSH Server

- We can write our comments to the DFRobot instruction which is in English
- It is eventually worth it to check the Chinese LattePanda Forum to find the latest development:
https://mc.dfrobot.com.cn/thread-305424-1-1.html
- We can find there also a bit more information for instance it shows a picture of the LattePanda display flat cable connectors as well as the touch overlay:
- Still we are happy to find here the latest information about Linux on the LattePanda by DFRobot:
https://www.dfrobot.com/blog-1547.html
We think the LattePanda V1 is an interesting device, since it as a Raspberry Pi 4 alternative which is available in Switzerland, and is one of the view devices which offers touch support for Linux.
