How suitable is the Pinephone for mobile office applications?

Here is part 1 one of this discussion:

How to make out of the Pinephone a device which suitable for mobile office applications?” (for users, and not only for developers)

What is the view of Peter Gamma from www.petegamma.org about thist topic:

Peter Gamma with many years of experience in evaluating how to use the Pinephone with keyboard as a writing machine:

  • The Pinephone can be used with a wired keyboard and a mouse as describe here:
  • It can be used with Abiword and Gnumeric.
  • I have installed postmarketOS on the external SD card of my Pinphone.
  • I can pull the SD card from my Pinephone and stick it into my PC to process there for instance Abiword files further.
  • This has some issues with permissions at my first attempt.
  • Look in the Pine64 forum about a discussion about this topic and ask question there.
  • This problem should be relatively easily solvable.
  • This was for me personally the easiest way to transfer files to my PC and back from my Pinehpone.

But with my Android phone I have an excellent mobile office software and that is Softmaker Office for Android.

  • And I have furthermore an excellent Bluetooth keyboard with backlit and German charakters which works great with Android:
  • the German characters can be choosen by an on screen keyboard on Andoid if the Bluetooth keyboard does not offer this.
  • The Pinephone keyboard is only available in English.
  • postmarketOS on the Pinphone offers only support for English and Czech.
  • I could in principle now use my Pinephone to process files on a SD card with Abiword and Gnumiric.
  • I can stick the SD card into my PC and process the files further on my PC with Abiword and Gnumeric.
  • Abiword and Gnumeric are available for Windows and Linux.
  • I need a cloud free setup for privacy reasons.
  • Wrong spelling due to missing options of German layout caused by limitations of the Pinphone could be corrected with a spell checker.

But after looking at all of these different aspects, I came to the conclusion that for me personally it is easer to use an Android phone with:

  • NextCloudPi as a private cloud which fits in my pocket.
  • It is a home sever in the size of a Raspberry Pi 4.
  • It synchronizes my data from my Android phone to my PC, and not Google Inc. anymore.
  • And scrcpy which is pronounced “screen copy” serves as a remote desktop software.
  • scrcpy is the most stable remote desktop top software for Andoid I know.
  • mouse and keyboard work well with scrcpy from PC to Android phone.
  • This setup with NextCloudPi and scrcpy is a bit complicated but very comfortable and suppose also very reliable.
  • I suppose I will install around three desktop PCs with three NextCoudPis to have a setup in which I can trust.
  • But once it is installed it should be very professional,
  • For instance also suitable for research institutes.
  • NextCloudPi and scrcpy which is pronounced “screen copy” offers the features I need for a my mobile office with which I am happy with.
  • It is a setup which is optimized for privacy.
  • We can also use an Android phone without SIM card to optimize privacy in this setup.
  • I have connected my Android phone over a wired ethernet adapter to a router which is connected to my PC.
  • In my router web front end I can see the ip adress of
  • my PC
  • my NextCloudPi
  • and my Android phone.
  • And if this connection is stable NextCloudPi should work great.
  • I will keep my original files on my Android phone.
  • But I have always a copy on my NextCloudPi as soon as I connect my Andoid phone to my router with the wired ethernet connection.
  • In contrast to this Android setup which was made in Switzerland, does the Pinephone setup which was made in USA not feel a bit as if it was made from “Pine wood”?
  • The Pinephone setup I evaluated is very basic compared to my Android setup.
  • But my Pinephone setup should work in principle too.
  • It is based on the external SD card of my Pinephone to exchange data to my PC.
  • The Android setup described above fits better for my needs than the Pinephone setup.
  • But also the Android setup takes time to make it run reliable.
  • But once it works I suppose I will have it for many years.
  • At least until a Pinephone 3 with Ubuntu 25 desktop version comes onto the market, or a Raspberry Pi 6 with the size of the Pinephone which is 10 x more powerful than the PP.

And I invite all the Linux coders around the world to update the Pinephone setup which I described here for mobile office to make it more user friendy.

  • What I miss is a PP keyboard with Swiss german layout.
  • A pre-installed Samba server with an example how share data with a Windows and Linux PCs.
  • And a special version of LibreOffice for the Pinephone which is free from menues and can be controlled by keyboard short cuts.

Information for product sellers who do stock market speculation and scalping with products mentioned by Peter Gamma on www.petergamma.org

According to the little experience of Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org, many of the products listed here are still full of issues which need to be resolved. If you do stock market speculation and scalping with those, you will loose Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org as a buyer of these products and as a reviewer. Is this not risky? Will you not loose a majority of your costumers as well?

And is it not so, that society in general does not accept stock market speculation and scalping with products as those which are listed here? And will you not be politically incapable of finding a majority of the voters if you do stock market speculation and scalping with these products?

And as a consequence will you not be condemned and punished by a political referendum soon? Especially if you do this to a Swiss, since are not majority of Swiss against stock market speculations and scalping with people on a budget? And people in Switzerland are known for a lot of political referendums, since we have direct democracy in this country.

And Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org will fight up to the European Court of Human Rights against people who do stock market speculation and scalping with the products which are mentioned on www.petergamma.org. And if they do not have yet the legal basis there to do so, he will fight for it.

What is a scalper?

A scalper is someone who buys something and resells it at a price far above the initial cost. For instance some says: “He got theater tickets through a scalper”: Someone who buys tickets to an event in order to resell them at a profit. And is it not also scalping if you take reviews from this site to make out of it a new product offer, and sell it for a higher price? We doubt that you will be successful with it. Since Peter Gamma will review your product and will user not come back to www.petergamma.org after that?
