What can we actually do with our evaluation of a low-cost high-quality ECG & EEG device which is suitable for scientific studies?

What can we actually do with the device we evaluated:

Alternative to the Muse headband

  • We started meditating with a Garmin Forerunner 235. The device was handy and comfortable to wear. We could use the ANT+ heart rate grapher to meditate. The more relaxed we where, to lower the heart rate frequency was. But what can mediators do more with a Forerunner 235? According to this table:
  • The accuracy is about 80 % compared to a 3 channel ECG device.
  • We tested the Muse headband with the Mind Monitor as well, but we saw now reason the replace our Forerunner 235 by a Muse headband with the Mind Monitor, since both devices where similar effective for us personally.
  • The Muse S has an accuracy of about 80 % against a professional device which is used in scientific labs for sleep studies.
  • We estimate the accuracy of a Muse headband also about 80 % compared to a g.tec medical headsset. But the OpenBCI headset of our review should nearly reach the accuracy of the g.tec medical headset, if transmission speed is not a limit at 16 channels.
  • The Mind Monitors offers many more options what can be done with the Muse Headband. But we do computer scientists such as Mind Monitor developer James Clutterbuck not use a device which really serious meditators and scientists choose to meditate for their development?

Alternative to the Dreem2 headband

  • Since the Dreem2 also consist of 4 EEG channels as the Muse headband, we suppose that the situation can be compared to the Muse headband

Alternative to Neurocity Crown

  • Neurocity Crown offers WIFI transmission
  • It has only 8 channels
  • Four channels are placed at the pre-frontal cortex, the others at the back of the head
  • This construction does not fit very well to our projects where we are interested in localized gamma wave activity in the pre-frontal cortex.

Alternative to the Schiller Medilog AR12 Plus Holter Recorder

  • The Schiller ECG device is an ECG device which can be used for mobile applications, the OpenBCI headset can do this as well
  • The Schiller ECG is a medical grade device, the OpenBCI device has the specifications for this, too
  • Furthermore OpenBCI offers open source software, we do not know if the Schiller ECG device offers this, too.
  • The A/D conversion rate of OpenBCI is higher than that of the Schiller ECG
  • The OpenBCI device fit s with the requirements to be a research grade device, but not the Schiller ECG device, since the A/D conversion rate is too low.

Alternative to a TA 220 recorder from iWorx

  • OpenBCI has the specifications to do so.
  • iWorx has an ECG toolbox which is 1000 USD which does not allow scripting
  • we suppose we can use HeartPy with the OpenBCI ECG and can to everything we need with it inclusive writing Python scripts

Alternatives to the devices Rob ter Horst tested on his YouTube channel

  • For activities for non-intense activities without strong body movements.
  • The device we evaluated has eventually the higher accuracy than the devices Rob ter Horst tested.

Alternatives to the devices Cody Rall MD with Techforpsych tested on his YouTube channel

  • We can test if this device is not an alternative to many of the devices Cody Rall MD with Techforpsych reviewed on his channel during the last 10 years.

Alternative to the Vernier respiration belt monitor

with respiratory rate estimation from these tho researchers

Peter Charlton, Kings Colleague London

  • With respiatory rate estimation from ECG for instance using Peter Charltons respiratory rate estimation toolbox for Matlab

Talha Iqbal, Post doctoral researcher at Insight, University of Galway

  • Respiratory Rate estimation in Python form ECG which can be found on Iqpal s YouTube channel. The link to it can also be found in our journal.

Evaluate if we need a device with better specifications for our project

  • as described here:

But all of this needs to be tested and verified, developers welcome to participate.
