Over the last view years, we observed an increase in accuracy especially in optical heart rate monitor sports watches.
There was also an increase in accuracy of the sports sensor validators. Some of them used clinical and research grade ECG devices. Popular sports watch reviewers as Rob ter Horst started to use numerical data for his comparison studies.
But what we miss is a quality control which is independent from sports sensor companies, which would increase the accuracy of the devices, which would make them interesting for new applications, as for instance clinical and research applications.
Sports physiolgists which are publicly funded could to the job. But they lack of generally accepted testing protocol, reference devices and testing methods. A cooperation of these with scientists and cardiologists would be helpful to increase the accuracy of these validation studies.
