Four years ago Pinephone developer Martijn Braam showed us demos of desktop applications which run on the PinePhone:
- One of the applications which he showed was LibreOffice.
- Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org has installed LibreOffice on the Pinephone supported by Pine64 forum member wibble.
- LibreOffice runs on the Pinephone now and is available in app stores of the Pinephone,
- but users complained that it is not usable on the Pinephone screen.
- It is usable with the Pinephone dock and an external screen.
- But for whom is this a staisfying solution?
- But what does Pinephone application developer jakfish offer us in the Pine64 forum in the year 2024?
he writes about his latest development, and that is MS Word 97 & box86/WINE in the Pine64 forum:
- It’s a bit of a hike to get to the end of compiling and installing.
- But once done, box86/WINE performs admirably on the PP Community phone/physical keyboard.
- In xfce (though not in Manjaro Phosh, oddly), LibreOffice has laggy typing.
- but Word 97, despite its 20-second start-up, has none.
- and once the program is up, it’s as robust as anything on the PP.
- All its features function and it works with the phone’s suspend.
Word 97 is a great application, but it was developed 27 years ago.
But we do not complain about jakfish and are happy about his latest software development for the Pinephone and for sharing his experiences with it.
- jakfish says, Word 97 is one of the better office applications for the Pinephone.
- This is a bit of a suprise, but important to know.
- We have to change completely what we expect from the Pinephone.
- The Pinephone is an expensive phone.
- Together with the PP keyboard it sarts from around 400 USD shipping included to Switzerland.
- For comparison, a BIGTREETECH Pad 7 with 7 inch screen is available for around 100 USD on Aliexspress.
- This tablet can run Raspberrry Pi OS and LibreOffice.
- LibreOffice is usable on 7 inch screens.
- So we have to ask ourselves is it worth to buy a Pinephone for mobile office, or is a 100 USD BIGTREETECH Pad 7 not more suitable than a Pinepone for mobile office?
And
- What the Pinephone promised us four years ago is a reality with SoftMaker Office 2024 for iOS and Android.
- SoftMaker Office 2024 for iOS and Android is intended to offer the full range of functions of a desktop office application, as it is reviewed in Heise online recently.
- Who needs the full range of functions of a desktop office application on a phone screen?
- We do not need this urgently, but it is a nice feature.
- And in contrast to LibreOffice on the Pinephone, which is only usable with the Pinephone dock and an external HDMI screen, SoftMaker Office 2024 has a great touch functionality on the phone screen.
- And if we attach a HDMI monitor to our Android phone, whe can use the full functionality of the desktop applicaiton of the Office app.
So what we expected from LibreOffice on the Pinephone we find we now with Softmaker Office and Android phones. Is this not a pity? In principle, also LibreOffice could be adapted the the phone screen as softmaker Office. But who will do this, if the community of Linux phone users continues to be so small as it currently is?
- furthermore, the language support for instance in postmarketOS is very poor.
- postmarketOS offers only English and Czech
- And this is big issue for me personally who lives in Switzerland.
- When I go to Digitec Switzerland to buy a keyboard there, it has a Swiss German Layout.
- But will this keyboard work together with a Pinephone running postmarketOS wich supports only English and Czech?
- This is hard to believe.
Information for product sellers who do stock market speculation and scalping with products mentioned by Peter Gamma on www.petergamma.org
According to the little experience of Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org, many of the products listed here are still full of issues which need to be resolved. If you do stock market speculation and scalping with those, you will loose Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org as a buyer of these products and as a reviewer. Is this not risky? Will you not loose a majority of your costumers as well?
And is it not so, that society in general does not accept stock market speculation and scalping with products as those which are listed here? And will you not be politically incapable of finding a majority of the voters if you do stock market speculation and scalping with these products?
And as a consequence will you not be condemned and punished by a political referendum soon? Especially if you do this to a Swiss, since are not majority of Swiss against stock market speculations and scalping with people on a budget? And people in Switzerland are known for a lot of political referendums, since we have direct democracy in this country.
And Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org will fight up to the European Court of Human Rights against people who do stock market speculation and scalping with the products which are mentioned on www.petergamma.org. And if they do not have yet the legal basis there to do so, he will fight for it.
What is a scalper?
A scalper is someone who buys something and resells it at a price far above the initial cost. For instance some says: “He got theater tickets through a scalper”: Someone who buys tickets to an event in order to resell them at a profit. And is it not also scalping if you take reviews from this site to make out of it a new product offer, and sell it for a higher price? We doubt that you will be successful with it. Since Peter Gamma will review your product and will user not come back to www.petergamma.org after that?
