The “Linux Cast” is wrong – the Pinephone is good

Last Updated on June 19, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

I contradict what “The Linux Cast” says:

that the Pinephone is not bad:

the Pinephone is good

After I was annoyed for several years about the Pinephone I came today to this conclusion.

and the reason is:

Office mobile

  • I had issues for a long time to be on the wrong path with LibreOffice LibreOffice on the Pinephone:

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=16614

  • These kind of applications are the wrong choice for this pine wood phone.
  • Abiword works satisfyingly on the Pinephone.
  • Gnumeric works satisfyingly on the Pinephone.
  • I need a device for mobile office daily.
  • And I could not find an alternative device which is as handy as the Pinephone.
  • I have articulated here all my wishes:
  • And if someone has the same needs as I have and want to make all of my whishes real, this is very welcome.
  • Just put everything I mentioned into a Pinephone distro and put it onto a GITHUB page.
  • This would be fine, but I can do without it.

Writing to the external SD card

  • Is a trivial problem with permissions in Linux I suppose:

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=19297

  • It was not trivial for me personally since I am a Linux beginner.
  • So I had to put my Pinephone on the screed for one year until I saw the light.
  • And nobody in the Pine64 forum I asked for help saw the light as well and could help me in a way that I saw the light.
  • They could only help me with strange work-arounds which have let me put my Pinephone onto the screed.

folder sharing to a desktop PC

  • Supporters in the Pine64 forum suggest sophisticated solutions:

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=18080

  • All of these are scary for me personally.
  • I am scared that they could annoy me for another year.
  • And I have to put my Pinephone on the screed for another year, until I recover from being annoyed.
  • Also regarding the Pinephone and Samba sharing the Pine64 forum was not helpful to this date:

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=19298

  • But I looked at some instructions for a Samba sharing today.
  • Samba sharing between a Raspberry Pi, a Windows and Linux PC is easy.
  • And what is easy with a Raspberry Pi is certainly also easy with the Pinephone.
  • And as soon as data exchange over the external SD card work to my PC.
  • And as soon as Samba sharing work to my Ubuntu PC.

Then my Pinephone is a device which I can work with as a daily driver.

  • Which it was not for many years.
  • And then it is eventually also worth to have a closer look how to change the keyboard layout of the Pinephone.
  • I am currently setting up a NextCloudPi server for data exchange between my old Android phone and my desktop PC:

https://petergamma.org/category/nextcloudpi

  • This is relatively easy to setup and should work.
  • I do this because I could not solve with the Pinephone what I wanted up to the present day for several years.
  • Has this to do with the promotion which was done on YouTube about the Pinephone?
  • And has this to do with people who use marketing software to contol certain device forums?
  • NextCloudPi requires more devices than a single Pinephone.
  • And these are a Raspberry Pi with NextCloudPi and a router.
  • NextCloudPi is a complicated a complicated chain.
  • a Pinephone could make this chain simpler.
  • And as soon as I have time I can can try to solve the problems mentioned above.
  • But to depend upon the Linux Pinephone is not good for the mind
  • This is my personal experience which I share here.
  • Therefore I will use an Android phone with NextCloudPi for the time being, which was relatively easy to set up.

A main issue where for me personally with the Pinephone the YouTube reviews about this device. They raised expectations the device did not full-fill, as for instance:

The Pinephone can do everything”:

This statement is wrong. The Pinephone cannot change the natural laws. Therefore the statement that the Pinephone can do anything is already refuted.

  • But all the same, I invite you to look for alternatives to the Pinephone as soon as possible as I do.
  • I do it since years, and haven’t found it.
  • But it is worth to have a closer look at devices which are based on the Rasbperry Pi zero 2 w or CM4.
  • There are more and more devices which are built on these platforms available.

Information for product sellers who do stock market speculation and scalping with products mentioned by Peter Gamma on www.petergamma.org

According to the little experience of Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org, many of the products listed here are still full of issues which need to be resolved. If you do stock market speculation and scalping with those, you will loose Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org as a buyer of these products and as a reviewer. Is this not risky? Will you not loose a majority of your costumers as well?

And is it not so, that society in general does not accept stock market speculation and scalping with products as those which are listed here? And will you not be politically incapable of finding a majority of the voters if you do stock market speculation and scalping with these products?

And as a consequence will you not be condemned and punished by a political referendum soon? Especially if you do this to a Swiss, since are not majority of Swiss against stock market speculations and scalping with people on a budget? And people in Switzerland are known for a lot of political referendums, since we have direct democracy in this country.

And Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org will fight up to the European Court of Human Rights against people who do stock market speculation and scalping with the products which are mentioned on www.petergamma.org. And if they do not have yet the legal basis there to do so, he will fight for it.

What is a scalper?

A scalper is someone who buys something and resells it at a price far above the initial cost. For instance some says: “He got theater tickets through a scalper”: Someone who buys tickets to an event in order to resell them at a profit. And is it not also scalping if you take reviews from this site to make out of it a new product offer, and sell it for a higher price? We doubt that you will be successful with it. Since Peter Gamma will review your product and will user not come back to www.petergamma.org after that?
