Negative experiences with the Pinephone revisited

Last Updated on August 25, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org invested a lot of time in the Pinephone, but hasn t used it for a single day up do now

Privacy phone

  • As privacy phone, he uses now a Pixel 6 Pro with GrapheneOS instead of the Pinephone.
  • It is cheaper, more powerful, and according to my own little experience, the community for de-googled Android phones is more alive than for the Pinephone as a privacy phone

Office on mobile phones

  • Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org invested a lot of time in LibreOffice on the Pinephone. Installing it, reviewing it, etc.

  • It should work now in principle. My preferred option for LibreOffice on the Pinephone is this one:

  • But I went back to Softmaker Office on Android, since I found out that it is possible to use it with a memory stick, both on the Android phone and on the PC as a cloud-free solution:

  • I used Softmaker Office for Android before I became interested in the Pinephone.
  • Softmaker for Android has the full desktop functionality.
  • It is touchable
  • It has a support forum
  • It has a (small) community of users
  • LibreOffice on the Pinephone currently does not have this (small) community

Pinephone as a Linux mini computer

  • I have let go of this project.
  • The problem is software installation.
  • It took me almost a month to install LibreOffice on the Pinephone
  • I suppose for other applications it is not better.
  • I decided now for the Raspberry Pi platform
  • my preferred device is the Raspberry Pi zero 2 w with DietPi.
  • DietPi is based on Raspberry Pi OS.
  • Raspberrry Pi OS has been developed over the last 10 years,
  • Therefore I suppose it has much lesser issues than the Pinephone distros.

PineEU store

  • The Pinephone is now also available in the PineEU store for „insane“ 350 Euros.
  • The PineEU shop si a dream made come true of ex Pine64 community manager Lukasz Erecinski, but for whom else?
  • Pine64 Interview with Lukasz Erecinski
  • Other Linux phones such as the Volla Phone don t need a special „EU store“.
  • There are available for instance at shops like Digitec Switzerland.
  • Recently there was another used Pinephone available on Ricardo Switzerland incl Pinephone keyboard for 150 USD, but Peter missed it.
  • The Pine64 EU shop has very high prices and is according to my own little experience not a shop which is very alive and competitive:
