Negative experiences with the Pinephone in recent years

Last Updated on July 7, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

  1. High shipping costs and import taxes to Switzerland.

2. PineEU shop has much higher prices than US shop.

3. Pine64 forum members support physiologist Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org to install LibreOffice on the Pinephone which took him almost a month working every day a little bit, only to find out that LibreOffice is not usable on the Pinephone screen.

6. Peter wanted the use the external SD card as a storage device for privacy data. But when he wanted to use this SD card on his Ubuntu PC, it was not possible to save the files there. He received support from the Pine64 forum how to solve this problem. But he has let it be for a year. Too much time invested in the Pinephone. And a Raspberry Pi with NextCloudPi could solve this problem easier.

9. But when he looked once more after a year to this problem with the SD card, he sah it through. He thought again that the Pinephone could be a great device for mobile office. And also Jackfish from the Pine64 forum who installed Word97 in a virtual box on the Pinephone. Jackfish bought the Pinephone because of the keyboard. But then the keyboard was pulled from the market. Reasons which are told for it are lack of demand and issues. But the Pinephone keyboard was one of the topics with the most views in the Pine64 forum.

10. We can find hardly any news since about a year about the Pinephone from Pine64.

11. Pine64 does not resolve the issues of the Pinephone keyboard.

12. Pine64 works on the development of the Pinetime. We also looked at the Pinetime, but lost our interested in it, since there are more interesting Linux watches out there for us personally.

13. The Pinephone keyboard makes the Pinphone a device which is worth buying. Pulling a device like the Pinephone keyboard from the market which is usable without offering an alternative is a reason to put the Pinephone on our BLACKLIST:

14. I bought a Pinephone plus keyboard which is about 400 USD in Switzerland.

I invested a lot of time in it. But I did not use it for a single day. And it has even become less interesting with the unavailablity of the Pinephone keyboard.

15. I made also negative experiences in the Pine64 forum regarding the Pinephone keyboard:
