Issues we had with wired ethernet adapters to connect an Android phone to a router to NextCloudPi to a PC in several tests

For privacy reasons we want a private cloud (nextcloudpi) which is connected over a wired ethernet cable to a router to a Pi with nextcloudpi to our desktop PC. But there is a whole science about wired ethernet adapter for Android phones:

A. The first apdapter was 11 dollars when we bought it:

B. The second apdapter was 12 dollars when we bought it:

  1. We have bought apdaper A multi-adapter for the Pinephone, but we have let go of the Pinephone

2. The multi-adapter which we bought on Aliexpress for 12 USD had the following features:

  • to power the Android phone over the adapter worked
  • the wired ethernet connection worked as well, and the ip of the phone was visible in the router.

3. Later on

  • both features did not work anymore
  • With a Xiaomi Pocophone nothing worked at all
  • With a Fairphone 2 charging worked but not the ethernet

4. We bought a second multi-adapter (B) on Aliexpress with less features for another 12 dollars

  • nothing worked with the Fairphone 2 with this new adapter
  • With the Pocophone the wired ethernet apapter worked and the ip adress was visible in the router, but the phone did not charge

5. We connected a second Pocophone to the second adapter.

  • Charging worked. But now we can the ip adress of two Pocophones in the router. Rebooting the router and the phone did not change anything.

We cannot recommend any of these adapters until now for the purpose we tested those. Both had issues in our tests and the connectivity was not reliable and fragile.

The situation seems to be similar with Pinephone docking adapter. For the Pinephone cheap adapter are not recommended. We tested 3 of those which did not work partially. Only the offical adapter can be recommended and only for the features tested and published in the Pine 64 forum. With Android wired ethernet adpapters the situation seems to be similar. Extensive tests are necessary to find a suitable adapter.

All the phones we tested are old phones we bought on Ricardo Switzerland to flash Ubports on it. But the Pocophone boot loader unlock was tricky, and with the Fairphone we did not manage either to do it at the first attempt. Eventually the adapter we tested work better with new phones, but we did not test it yet.
