Vasella’s high salary, which amounted to up to 42 million Swiss francs annually in 2007
as he had also chaired the board of directors since 1999, attracted criticism. This made Vasella one of the best paid managers in Switzerland.
His agreed remuneration for consulting work and non-competition agreement of 12 million francs annually for six years after his departure, with a maximum of 72 million francs if the contract conditions were adhered to, caused a stir and criticism across Switzerland.
This became known in mid-February 2013, two weeks before the referendum on the federal popular initiative “against rip-offs”. The initiative is directed against the perceived exorbitant remuneration of individual managers in Swiss companies.[8][9] After strong public pressure, Vasella waived the compensation a few days after it became known. The non-competition clause is therefore invalid.[10]
In July 2013, Novartis announced that Vasella would receive almost 5 million francs (4.4 million euros), of which 2.2 million francs in shares, for “certain transition services” between February and the end of October 2013. A consulting contract that ran until the end of 2016 guaranteed Vasella $25,000 per day of advice, with a minimum of $250,000 for each of the years 2014, 2015 and 2016.[11]
And all of this is done by the Vasella’s of the world to support studies which show that Vasella’s drugs are more effective than these sports, so that the Vasella successors can continue to make big money out of their drugs.
