Is HackEEG 32 a good Emotiv Epoc Flex 32 alternative which does not require a Software which has a monthly fee?

  • The recommendation on ReserachGateNet is too look for an alternative for Emotiv Epoc Flex 32 as soon as possible, because of the monthly fee for their LabStreaminLayer software, which is if we remember right about 100 USD a month to be able to use LabStreamingLayer with Epoc Flex 32. Hardware costs for Epoc Flex 32 are about 1200 USD.
  • When we look at the comparison table of Hack EEG , we see that HackEEG has LabStreamingLayer support without a monthly fee:

  • According to this page:

https://www.crowdsupply.com/starcat/hackeeg/updates/funding-goal-reduction

  • Deluxe 32 Channel HackEEG is going from $1,775.00 to $1,660.00. This means by our calculation which needs to be verified, if choosing HackEEG 32 instead of Epoc Flex 32, after about 5 month, HackEEG is more affordable than Epoc Flex 32, due to the monthly software fee.
  • Unfortunately, HackEEG is currently not available due to Covid 19:
  • HackEEG offers LSL support, and a modified version of OpenBCI which supports 32 channels. William Croft from OpenBCI claimed, that HackEEG offers an old, old version of OpenBCI GUI. According to the HackEEG GITHUB:

https://www.crowdsupply.com/starcat/hackeeg/updates/hackeeg-32-channels-displaying-in-openbci

  • The files are three years old. But we cannot conclude from that, that the modified OpenBCI for 32 channel EEG is only three years old.
  • But it we understood right, the modified version of OpenBCI GUI is connected of LSL to HackEEG. That would mean, that the input is through LSL.
  • Unfortunately, we do not know of any user who report, that they us 32 channel HackEEG. That means, that we eventually are the first testers of this setup in this configuration. We could not find any full demos for this setup. Do it at your own risk.
  • For Emotiv Epoc Flex 32, we have demos how to mount it, and demos, which demonstrate, that it works when connected to different software. Info about it can be found on this site. If we want to be on the safe side, consider if it is worth for you to spend the 100 USD monthly fee.
