Matthews uses the Polar E600 chest strap heart rate monitor (Polar T31 type heart rate monitor) to measure heart rate, which is also used for scientific studies:

But we do not know if Dr. Evan Matthews uses the Polar H10 chest strap as a gold standard device for RR interval assessments if intense activities with strong body movements are investigated as recommended in following paper of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports in Magglingen which was partly funded by Polar:
