Different Sleep Tracking Algorithms in Different Garmin Watches?

Last Updated on December 4, 2022 by pg@petergamma.org

Since a longer period, we use Fenix 6 watches with a Polar OH1 sensor, a combination which is accurate at 12 breath per minute for practicing breath meditation. But we never had any sleep data in Garmin Connect from the Fenix 6. Since shortly, we are also testing a Garmin Venu watch simultaneously. Now we observe, that the Venu shows sleep data, but not the Fenix 6, both watches where worn simultaneously at the same wrist. Use they different algorithms.

We are interested in sleep metrics which are as accurate as possible. But there is currently no winning device. We currently are comparing:

  • Garmin Venu
  • Aliexpress Sensor belt (Non Wearable Under Bed Sheet Heart Rate and Breath Rate Smart Sleep Tracker)
  • Muse S
  • Apple watch 6

Sleep Score

  • The Garmin Venu has it
  • the Muse S deliver Sleep score
  • the Apple watch 6 does not deliver a sleep score
  • the HappySleep app has no sleep score
  • Withings has sleep score

– We do not know of any long-term studies which these kind of trackers, of users who use them on the long term

– We do not know of any scientific validation studies, which compares these devices

– We suppose that a combination of several devices, together with manual protocols could be most helpful for users who are looking for a cost-effective and easy solution.
