Criticism about Rob ter Horst and his YouTube channel “the Quantitative Scientist”

Last Updated on February 3, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

We would like to repeat our criticism about Rob ter Horst and his YouTube channel. Rob ter Horst publishes plots with accuracy ranking of sports watches on YouTube. He uses two Polar H10 chest straps as his most accurate reference device. This could be misleading for non-scientists. For people who aren’t familiar with scientific measurement methods, Rob sells those the Polar H10 as the most accurate device scientists like him uses for scientific studies of sports watches. This statement is not true. Dr. Milind Desai from Cleveland Clinic uses 3 lead ECG devices for this purpose. Rob ter Horstrefers to a publication of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports about the Polar H10:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31004219/

But this paper is from sports scientists. Rob is not a sports scientist, but a postoctoral scientist working in an instute who does scientific studies for medcine.

The paper of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports sais only half the truth also. For the whole truth, check our review:
