Can we work with the LattePanda V1 with Lubuntu and 7 inch touch display as our daily driver for computing?

  • Nobody has reported that he does this.
  • We have contradictory information about Lubuntu running on the LattePanda V1:
  • Unter the following link it says, the deveoper did not get Lubuntu to work, in the beginning of the installation demo video:
  • That is why he has choosen Ubuntu instead and patched the kernel to get everything running.
  • We can see that this developers used a 32 inch screen as video output, probably over HDMI in his instruction.
  • the developer says nothing about touch.
  • but in the instruction of DFRobot it shows how to install Lubuntu on the LattePanda V1:
  • Did DFrobot get it to work, without the problems the first developer had, or does DFRobot keep silent about issues?
  • The DFRobot instruction shows how to get touch to work over the flat cable video out connector.
  • The Dfrobot instruction says nothing about HDMI.
  • In this example it shows that HDMI out is working with Windows 10:
  • this example shows even the function of two HDMI monitors on a LattePanda V1:
  • Here it says about Lubuntu on the LattePanda V1:
  • “In the end, we installed Lunbutu 20.04 perfectly on the LattePanda
  • which solved the problems of the
  • BT
  • Wifi
  • Audio Output
  • Touch Panel
  • and IGD ( IGD = Integrated Graphics Device)
  • we used the optimized kernel to improve the performance of the LP.

But it says nothing about HDMI. Is there an issue with it in Lubunut, since it is not mentioned?

  • The Dfrobot instruction further says:
  • If you have time, you can customize the ISO disc image file to be suitable for the LP, including:
  • Turning off the default built-in output, and utilizing the HDMI output signal instead (has this not been imlemented, and how can we do this? Is there support from Dfrobot how to do this?)
  • Question: is it not possible to have connected two screens, one over flat cable and one over HDMI, or switch between these two?
  • These kind of settings can sometimes be changed in the BIOS.
  • DFRobot suggest to if you have time to further:
  • Give Docker support to and get better performance out of our optimized kernel (?)
  • Make a pre-installed touch screen driver (?)
  • Change io scheduling and add more file system support (?)
  • Pre-install the SSH Server” (?)

We cannot find any clear information about if HDMI works by default or not on Lubuntu with the LattePanda V1

  • To have both outputs would be helpful to use the LattePanda both as a mobile computing device with 7 inch touch display as well as a stationary laptop if connected to a big screen over HDMI.
  • If HDMI does not work, we can either buy another flat cable 10 inch display, and change the screen each time, which is not optimal since these connectors are not made for everyday changing the display to which the device is connected to.
  • Since we have two Linux distros, Lubuntu and Ubuntu, we can create a dual boot device and boot into Ubuntu to get HDMI out.
  • If nothing works, we can use as a last solution Windows 10 on the LattePanda V1.
  • This would mean extra costs to buy a device with a Windows 10 licence.
  • We would prefer a Linux OS on a SBC computer, since SBC as the LattePanda V1 are not very fast and we should choose if possible an OS which does not eat up many resources.
We can conclude, that although there are open questions, this setup it is worth to test if we can get the setup to work.
  • There are different options we can try to get everything to work to fit our needs.
  • This is something we cannot say about all the device we listed here:

The other devices have issues which hinder us to choose those. This setup here is not easy either, and we do not know of any users who report to use it. But there are at least instruction available which can be tested to see if we can reproduce to get the LattePanda V1 to work the way we want it to.

There might be better and faster devices than the LattePanda V1, what do you expect from a device which is 6 years old? But as we have written before, most of of the devices we discuessed have issues which hinder us to start working with these devices. This is not the case with the LattePanda V1, altough it seems not easy to start with a setup as described here. But we cannot start to work with the device immediately, there is for instance no image which can be donwloaded and tested. The presented instructions need to be verified and tested.

We suppose that sooner or later there will be better options available than the LattePanda V1. But before we take over these devices with the OS they offer, they have to proof to us that is possible to work with those, and they have to proof us also, that it is possible to work better or easier with their new devices, and convince us to take those over. They have to proof that these devices are better than the LattePanda V1 with Lubuntu, which still misses a proof that it is worth buying.

If we can work with the LattePanda V1 running Lubuntu and a 7 inch touch display as a daily driver for computing needs to be tested first, and we do not know of anyone who has tested this before.
