Can treadmills for sporting acitivities be used for scientific studies?

Dr. Evan Matthews from Montclair State University uses such a device for doing an exercice stress test:

Is this one more example of a product which has been given up by the developer to use it for scientific purposes, and are now sold for sporting acitivities to use those devices for fun and in our spare time, and we cannot do anything really serous with it?

This was our experience with for instance optical smart watches and the tests of Rob ter Horst.

And we are asking the same question here. If we could do something really serious with these treadmills for sporting acitivities, would not somebody already have done it?

The trend of the world is that the quality of products increases and prices trop. But is this not the case for products for sporting acitvies such as treadmills? What is your opinion about this topic? Write it in the comments below?
