An empirical study of the MRIS which describes our experiences with NextCloudPi and how it made us suffer

Two weeks ago we worked a whole week every day a bit to sync a file over NextCloudPi to a smartphone and back. After a week, this worked with one file for one time. But we did not want to use this setup because the folder structure was not completely clear to us personally:

This week we have setup a second NextCloudPi setup. It tooks us once more every day working a little bit on it to install NextCloudPi on a second Raspberry Pi.

  1. At the first attempt the first time setup assistant was there. At our second attempt the assistant was not there anymore. We had this problem for the second time. The only thing that worked was reinstallation to bring it back.
  2. Then we reinstalled NextCloudPi completely. But on the next day we where not able to log in to NextCloudPi. We changed the password to a user defined password and we do not know if the mistake was there.
  3. So we had to reinstall NextCloudPi once more. Then the second of our 3 Raspberry Pi died for reasons we do not know.
  4. We pulled out the SD card from the first Raspberry Pi 3 as well as the SSD drive and put this setup away which worked previously.
  5. Then we had to install NextCloudPi once more. This time we added a new user as in the video:
  1. By experience it is worth to stick very closely to the instruction in the video. Only small alterations from it resulted in the need of a complete new NextCloudPi installation.
  2. Then we reintalled the Windows 10 NextCloudPi client.
  3. Unfortunately after the reinstallation parts of the previous installation remained and we do not know how to remove it. The old ip-adress are still there and we had to add the new one and it looks quiet messy.
  4. During the installation a big number of pop ups appeared which asked us to log in to the NextCloudPi web interface for reasons we do not know. We lost patience to log in everytime and did not do this because we did not needed this. This is very user unfriendly.
  5. Finally our fresh install of the Windows 10 NextCloudPi client was there and we could select new folders for synchronization.
  6. Next week, in the 3th week of our Nextcloud installation week we can try to reinstall the NextCloud Android app on our smartphone to get our setup working again on our second setup as we had it at the end of the first week.

Why does NextCloudPi sucks? We have spent now the second week with working on a NextCloudPi installation working every day a little bit on it. But we are physiologists and not soft- and hardware supporters and we do this against our will but we have no other choice. And it reminds us of our LibreOffice installation on the Pinephone, which was very time consuming and which then never used. But since NextCloud is an established software we suppose that we are able to solve our problem with it, although it takes a lot of time.
