Is There a Meditation Research Institute in Switzerland & are There Scientists who Conduct Meditation Research?

Last Updated on August 17, 2026 by pg@petergamma.org

Someone claimed there was no meditation research institute in Switzerland. But this statement is false. There is the Swiss Meditation Research Institute (MRIS), which is a private project of

Peter Gamma

on his personal page.

But are there any other meditation researchers in Switzerland?

Yes, they exist. And this is

Alex Gamma

He is a Private Lecturer and has conducted research and has published papers at the Psychiatric University Hospital in Zurich.

He also has published scientific papers on the topic of meditation research. His last publication about this topic was:

The Minimal Phenomenal Experience questionnaire (MPE-92M): Towards a phenomenological profile of “pure awareness” experiences in meditators

The Minimal Phenomenal Experience questionnaire (MPE-92M): Towards a phenomenological profile of “pure awareness” experiences in meditators

Published in PLOS ONE in July 2021

However, the trajectory of Alex Gamma’s scientific career seems to be somewhat bumpy. Alex only publishes scientific papers very rarely these days. Does this mean Alex now has to take on odd jobs? Today I encountered Alex as a clone at the Puls 5 Fitness Center in Zurich. But as far as I know, Alex Gamma lives in Glarus, Switzerland. Has Alex retreated to the mountains? And every now and then, I see a white bus with a Glarus (GL) license plate near Manesseplatz in Zurich.

Are these the side jobs of scientist Alex Gamma?

There is the Center for Healthy Minds in Madison, USA

The Center for Healthy Minds is a research institute at the University of Wisconsin–Madison dedicated to understanding the science of well-being and cultivating a kinder, more compassionate world through rigorous scientific inquiry. Founded in 2008 by Dr. Richard J. Davidson, the center investigates the neural bases of emotion, contemplative practices, and qualities of mind such as kindness, compassion, and resilience.

But in Switzerland, Meditation Research seems not yet to be well established.
