The state of affairs of sports sensor accuracy validation studies in the year 2023

Last Updated on January 4, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

1. The Swiss Federal Institute of Sports in Magglingen

  • compares the accuracy of the Polar 10 to a Schiller Medilog AR12 Plus Holter ECG device, which has no noise and motion artifact free ECG, but only motion detection.
  • The device is in the lower range of ECG devices as far as costs are concerned ($1700)
  • The paper is published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology 2019.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31004219/

  • We do not know of any more recent studies about this topic.

2. 197 authors cited the paper to this date:

  • Where these all sports man and sports women? We have not checked it. And where there also other authors than sports man or women among those who cited the paper, and authors, which where not happy about the paper? Check it yourself.

3. The US Army tests the Polar H10 with an EQ 02+ Lifemonitor (costs of the Adinstruments Equivital Starter Pack $ 2701) with Equivital Black Ghost software (request a quote) which has only ECG noise reduction but is not noise and motion artifact free, and write a technical report about it:

  • Why does the US Army not use Adinstruments LabChart sofware with the Adinstuments Equitival monitor which is noise and motion artifact free?

4. Dr. Matthews is a cardiovascular and exercise physiologist, Associate Professor, Exercise Science and Physical Education at Montclair State University, which is located near New York City. Montclair State University and uses the Adinstruments LabChart software (LabChart 8 Pro $ 7809 USD). Dr. Matthews tracks the Respiratory Rate with Adinstruments LabChart software and publishes a demo YouTube:

  • Why does Montclair State University and Dr. Matthews not test the accuracy of the Polar H10 with the Adinstruments Equital Sensor belt?
  • Montclair State University and the US Army have the equipement to test reference devices like the Polar H10 which are often used as reference devices in sports sensor validation papers, but the Polar H10 is only rarely tested and compared to high quality medical and research grade equipement.

5. Rob ter Horst, PhD. is happy with the Paper of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports in Magglingen and reviews it on his YouTube channel:

  • we have informed Rob ter Horst, PhD. about the facts whe have discussed in our journal. But he ignores those and does not discuss those.

6. The MEDITATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE SWITZERLAND (MRIS) has published a review about the Accuracy Studies of Consumer Grade Heart Rate Monitors: Methods, Testing Protocols, Reference Devices on Peter Gammas personal website:

  • The MEDITATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE SWITZERLAND (MRIS) has discussed the topic in great detail on Peter Gammas personal website:

7. The findings and the reviews of the MEDITATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE SWITZERLAND (MRIS) which are published on Peter Gammas personal website are ignored by sports sensor reviewers, cardiologists, sports sensor manufacturers, sports scientists, and research and medical grade device manufacturers around the world and are not discussed.
