To Install Home Assistant Operating System in a Virtual Box on a x86 LattePanda

Last Updated on November 26, 2022 by pg@petergamma.org

We decided to use a LattePanda with a x86 processor instead of a ARM processor, which are used for instance in Rasbperry Pi s, since it is much easier to get the .yaml files edited that way. Since we have sensors which are connected over Lab Streaming Layer, which require an x86 processor for Python LSL, we have a second argument for an x86 platform.

We aleady installed Home Assistant on a x86, which was not a mobile platform, according to the following instruction:

https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/generic-x86-64

We just flashed an image on a x86 machine. But if we do this with our RattePanda, we loose our Windows 10 operating system, which is preinstalled on the LattePanda. There are container versions and core versions of Home Assistant in this instruction:

But according to this table:

https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/#compare-installation-methods

only Home Assistant Operating System is suitable for our needs, since we are looking for a version of Home Assistant which offers all the features. But we think it is possible to keep our Windows 10 Operating System on our LattePanda, and run the Home Assistant Operating System in a virtual box, as explained in this video:

and we still got the Home Assistant Operating System running in a virtual box on a x86 LattePanda running Windows 10.
