Why to remove the SIM card for privacy revisited?

in the video at 2:39 Braxman says:

degoogled phones do not connect to Google. GrapheneOS is degoogled. But according to you , the carrier and the governement can still track you. An you futher say, this can be temporarly shut down by removing the sim card, or in Librem5 and Pinephone by switching of the cell modem switch.

In another video Braxman says GrapheneOS allows to switch of the SIM card. What is the advantage of this? Do i have to remove the sim card also with GrapheneOS if I want be safe from the government and the carrier, or can I simply switch off the sim card with GrapheneOS?

Treequell from the GrapheneOS forum wrote us, f you don’t want your phone to communicate with cell towers, you can enable airplane mode. Airplane mode is provided as part of AOSP, the feature is in no way to specific to GrapheneOS.

In the Pine64 forum it says the Pinephone gps does not work without sim card.

But it also says this is a software limitation that is being fixed. So I see no reason to remove the SIM card or to switch the modem off the increase privacy of the Pinphone. Is there still a reason?
