Summary of the issues of OpenBCI made in China

Last Updated on April 17, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

  • Stellar power had is ssues with WIFI shield
  • Hardware developer Jenelson had issues with connector between WIFI shield and Cyton board
  • Stellarpower did not had these issues with the connector.
  • Both of them reported about their experience in the www.openbci.com forum.
  • Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org will not report about in the www.openbci.com forum anyomore about thirt party products not sold from www.openbci.com. Do they not give strange answers there if someone does this?
  • There are instructions available how to repair the WIFI shield.
  • These two taken together with the instruction to repair the WIFI shield gives a total that it sould be possible to repair OpenBCI MADE IN CHINA.
  • Sellers on Aliexpress and eBay showed also working examples of this products, which indicates that they manage to get it to work.
  • What is striking that no one reports to use OpenBCI made in China in a way that he managed to get it to work.
  • The issue is eventually that if we look at this information that it takes a lot of time to get it to work.
  • Only 2 users report to have tested it and both found issues.
  • Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org reviews those now and he is the thirt person who shows interest in it, but lists the issues it has.
  • So the components are there, OpenBCI made in China also updated the instruction, but they did it only one time, as a sort of demo, but not more often.
  • So is it more than a marketing study which made them conclude that they cannot make money out of OpenBCI either?
  • We suppose if you really want you could resolve the issues of OpenBCI made in China with this information here, should it not be possible.
  • But the risk is there that OpenBCI made in China is only a garbage can of products which do not work.
  • OpenBCI made in China already have sent us a WIFI shield instead of a Bluetooth dongle, and it was not worth it to send it back, shipping costs are too high, which is a negative experienc.
  • And if we invest time in repairing something like this, is it not better to start a new architcture right away, as described here,
  • to not depend on the ADS1299 from TI, which caused us a lot of negative experiences in the past:

https://petergamma.org/tag/ads1299

  • A main issue seem to be that there are a lot of people try to make money out of EEG products like this, but fail.
  • So the question arrises if it is not better to offer instructions at the level of ADAFRUIT instead of countless product developers who try to sell EEG products but fail.
  • PS: What is also striking that we do not know of users who use the OpenBCI WFI shield, exept the authors of this paper:

https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/23/7/3763

  • And then we have two more products which are based in OpenBCI Cyon which have WIFI transmission, and these are the Neurosity Crown and the OpenBCI Galea.
  • So it seems that as soon as an issue was resolved @ www.openbci.com, they make a new product out of it which they want to sell to us,
  • But both of those neither Neurosity Crown nor Galea fits our needs.
