Why should one use Matlab in the year 2024 – because of OpenBCI, LSL & the Matlab respiratory rate estimation toolbox

Many good coders say we do not need Matlab. Almost anything which is available for Matlab is also available for Python, as for instance OpenBCI LSL for Python,

developed by Irene Vigué-Guix Ph.D. in ICT, MSc in Brain and Cognition, and BS in Biomedical Engineering

But one reason to choose Matlab is Peter H. Charlton’s respiratory rate estimation Matlab toolbox:

This is the easiest toolbox we know for respiratory rate estimation, ant id should work with Matlab, LSL and OpenBCI in real-time. So it should be in principle possible to see our respiration rate in Matlab in real-time from OpenBCI over LSL -:).

We suppose this is more accurate than respiration rate from a Garmin Fenix 6:

And does Peter H. Charlton not look more serious than Irene Vigué-Guix with here OpenBCI headset?

And would a guy like Peter Charton develop a respiration toolbox which is less accurate than a Fenix 6? Certainly not.

  • Matlab Home is about 200 USD.
  • If we want to write papers, we need a Matlab professional licence for 1000 USD.
  • That is why it is worth to look for an alternative as soon as possible.
  • We suppose the respiration rate toolbox runs also in the compiled version of Matlab which is free.
  • And in Octave which is free as well.

And the basics for respiration rate estimation in Python is already there as well. It can be found under www.petergamma.org under respiration.
