  • During the early years of his scientific career (1985-1991), he made seminal contributions in the fields of glutamate receptors and neuronal calcium signaling at the Brain Research Institute Switzerland.
  • In 1992 he went to Novartis Basel AG to acquire some experience in drug discovery.
  • In 1997 Thomas Knöpfel went to Japan to head the Laboratory for Neuronal Circuit Dynamics at the newly established RIKEN Brain Science Institute.
  • In 2013 Professor Thomas Knopfel became Chair of Optogenetics and Circuit Neurosciences at Imperial College in London, Division of Brain Sciences.
  • In 2023 Knopfel left the Imperial College in London and went to Hong Kong:
