Summary on 20.2.2024 of what are the issue of “OpenBCI made in China”?

Last Updated on February 20, 2024 by pg@petergamma.org

  • User Stellarpower has issues with the Wifi shield
  • Hardware developer Jenelson had problem with the communication between OpenBCI Cyton and Wifi shield
  • The Wifi shield issues can be resolved by one which is free from issues, or by soldering, but this is a lot of work, and is it worth it?
  • What alternatives do we have?
  • Bluetooth transmission is usually recommended for OpenBCI
  • But Fieldtrip developer Robert Oostenveld find issues with this as well:

«The connectivity with the dongle is not so stable, sometimes requiring multiple attempts to connect, resetting the board, replugging the dongle, etc.»

  • We suppose Ostenveld’s tests have been done with product from www.openbci.com
  • Then we finally have the cable version
  • If we remember correctly there was someone who has done it. A very skilled hardware developer. But Peter Gamma from www.petergamma.org does not remember where.
  • So it is in principle possible. But we did not find the software wich supports it, OpenBCI GUI does not. And it looked compliated for us personally. So is it worth it?
  • After all is «OpenBCI made in China» worth it? Write it in the comments below. If there are other persons than sellers wo are interested in selling those to us.
  • Is OpenBCI from www.openbci.com worth buying? Write it in the comments below.
