Which single board computer or Linux phone to choose for mobile applications (update after the Raspberry Pi 5 has been announced today)?

Last Updated on September 29, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

We received the news today that the Raspberry Pi 5 will be on the shelves in late October 2023. Our suggestion for users who do not want to waist their time with outdated devices:

A) choose a Pinephone

But only for applications where you find an independent community of happy users who can convince you.

And help us please to resolve this issue so that we can choose a Pinephone for our application:

B) choose a Raspberry Pi 5

Which looks similar to the Pi 4 (but is faster) as soon as it is on your shelves.

But only for applications where you find an independent community of happy users who can convince you.

It might need a bigger battery than the one listed here:

  • since the Pi 5 is much more powerful than the Pi 4.
  • leepspvideo called it in a first test he did for a month “the first Raspberry Pi which is a very credible desktop computer». And who does not want a very credible desktop computer in his pocket which doesn’t have to be much bigger than a large belt bag, which includes the Pi 5, a 20 000 mAh power bank, a 6.5 inch Android phone as a display connected over cable, and a second bag with several additional 20 000 mAh power banks to power this device 24 * 7?

But a warning to everyone, we do not know on which shelves the Pi 5 will be available in late October 2023 and how many pieces. The most reliable and interesting stock for Pi’s are for us personally used devices on eBay and Ricardo Switzerland.

  • If will some take some time as well, until the issues with the Pi 5 will be resolved (a case which fits, a passive cooler which is not yet available, a proof that the device runs reliable without any isses, etc.).
