To use an Android phone, an Android tablet or Windows 10 tablet with a Rasperry Pi instead of an iPad Pro?

We have discussed this topic previously in several posts in this journal. We did some tests with a Raspberry Pi 4 and a Raspberry Pi zero w 2 with power banks and with or without a Rasbperry Pi 5 inch and 7 inch screen. We found that these screen use a lot of power without a good power management, and we had to increase the battery capacity and almost double it in a first test.

So why not to choose a Android tablet, or a Android phone and use it as a monitor instead? This is possible over WIFI, but WIFI draws a lot of power as well. But it is also possible to connect Android devices over cable, as shown in this video:

One issue mentioned in this video is how to power the Android device when connected over a cable to a Pi. We have found a solution here:

If we choose static ip adresses do we need port scanning to find out the ip adress of the Pi, as shown in the above video? This needs to be tested.

Here is shown how to connect a Pi to a Ubuntu PC over ethernet cable to a Ubuntu PC with a static ip adress:

If we have this ethernet connection and static ip adresses, we can start a remote desktop session to the Pi from the device with the display. Here we found a solution how to solve this with a Windows PC:

Another solution is from sentdex how to start an ssh remote desktop to a Pi:

If it works we can for instance use a Microsoft Surface tablet as a Pi screen over an ethernet cable. Microsoft surface tablets can currently be bought at a good price on ebay, for instance a:

Surface Pro 4 Windows 10 tablet PC

  • has a 12,3” screen, this is a bit bigger than the screen of a Levono Tab 10 which we mentioned previously:

, and has more connectors:

  • One usb -3 connector
  • One display port connector
  • One connector for a charger which can also be used for a dock, which has ethernet, usb-3, audio, 2 x display port and more
  • It as a connector for a Microsoft surface keyboard at the bottom
