Which device to choose for sports scientists, physiologists, medical doctors & engineers who want to make a scientific study?

Rob ter Horst advices us which smartwatch to choose for weight lifting, cycling outsite and other activities. But for people who want to do scientific studies we suggest to choose a device which has a good basis in scientific papers to write further papers, as for instance the Cyton 3 channel ECG device:

We suggest for people who want to make scientific studies for instance this device instead of Apple watches and Polar H10 chest straps. The arguments for this are written down in our journal.

We suggest for people who want to do scientific studies for instance a Cyton 3 channel ECG device:

with the Python open source toolbox HeartPy:

But if if intense activities with strong body movements are investigated, we currently do not know an alternative to the Polar H10:

  • and for these activities we do not know of a paper which has studied the accuracy of Apple watches.

We think it is an issue that we do not have a 3 channel ECG device which can handle with noisy ECG signals caused by intense activities with strong body movements, an issue which should be resolved by engineers as soon as possible.
