Frederik D. Weber on multiple request introduced OpenBCI as a cheap alternative to record standard polysomnography. With this and SpiSOP you could in principle built your own private sleep research lab now for less than $ 1000 USD. With components from Aliexpress, it is about $ 570 for the EEG hardware:

Since it records standard polysomnography, I don t know whether an additional validation study is necessary, as has been done for the Dreem 2 headband. Frederik D. Weber called it “private sleep research lab”, it is suitable for private sleep research. The Dreem 2 is a medical grade device with only 4 EEG channels, the device has been validated for this purpose. Weber s device has 16 EEG channels and can also be a medical grade device if validated for this purpose.

Weber says, in theory, this device should work. Does this mean, he did not test it himself? I could not find anyone who confirms that he uses this device. I could not find any papers which uses this device either.
