Researchers at the Swartz Center of Computational Neuroscience developed method to remove artifacts in EEG signals. These are implemented in EEGLAB:

Artifact removal in EEG signals seems to be well developed. But how is it with ECG motion artifacts?
The g.tec medical supports wrote us some time ago, that they do not know anybody who have solved the problem of ECG motion artifacts, thes artifacts can only be reduced, for instance by using g.tec medical active electrodes, which are very expensive.

HeartPy offers the option to remove artifacts in noisy PPG and very noise ECG signals. But expensive research grade ECG devies are not used to validate the accuracy of sports heart rate sensors. Is the reason ECG motion artefacts during strong body movements? Further research should be done on this subject, for instance studies to see how good HeartPy is for removing ECG motion artifacts. And also if a smilar approach can be applied to remove ECG artifacts as for EEG artifacts. And the question should be answered, if ECG movement artifact algorithms can be implemented into high-end medical and research grade ECG devices, to make them suitable as reference devices to study the accuracy of different heart rate monitors.
