Which low cost high quality eeg device to choose to study localized gamma wave activity (II) (Hack EEG 32)?

In contrast to this example:

Adam Feuer lists 17 users who have used the HackEEG:

starting from Stanford University to Buck Institute.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Adam Feuer is no longer CEO of Starcat.io.

But Adam Feuer has responded to at least two of our support requests as long as he still was CEO. Eventually he supports HackEEG even if he is no longer CEO.

According to LinkedIn, Adam Feuer is a great coder at the university level. He has shown one example where one EEG channel is connected to a 32 channel version of OpenBCI over LSL.

If one channel works, the other 32 channels should work, too. If they do not work, we still can ask Adam Feuer for support.

Adam Feuer is a Zen Buddhist who meditaties. According to the demo, he meditates with HackEEG. We hope that HackEEG is part of his lifetime journey.

Issues we have with HackEEG:

  • it is more expensive than:
  • shipping and import taxes from US to Switzerland are high.
  • a solution based on multipe OpenBCI Cyton boards and InfluxDB would be more affordabe, but difficult.
  • If we use InfluxDB anyway, is it not easier to use single TGAM modules than Texas Instruments EEG chips which are not designed for InfluxDB and no one seem to use for InfluxDB.
  • In the low-cost high-quality domain, devices up to 16 channels based on OpenBCI is quiet straight forward. For higher channel numbers, some developement work has do be done.
  • But if Adam Feuer still supports HackEEG, it is one of the most interesting solutions for 32 channels.
  • HackEEG is listed as supported by LSL:

https://labstreaminglayer.readthedocs.io/info/supported_devices.html

  • No one seems to use HackEEG 32, but we think is an option also for physiologists who usually don’t code.
  • Next to Raspberry Pi, HackEEG is affected by COVID-19-related semiconductor supply-chain problems:

  • Starcat products are not available at this time.
  • They become available again, probably in mid- to late-2023.
  • Another advantage of Hack is that if a module breaks, the costs for replacement are not that high as the costs for the replacement of a 32 channel board.
  • But if Adam Feuer follows the standard of single board computers, then only 1 of 32 channel work, as shown in his demo, and the other 31 channels have issues.
  • If you want to debug the other 31 channels supported by Adam Feuer, go for it.
