Misleading information about the Orange Pi 5 on YouTube & Reddit?

Last Updated on May 3, 2023 by pg@petergamma.org

If we look at this and other YouTube videos about the Orange Pi 5 and Armbian:

“leepspvideo The Orange Pi 5 just got a Great OS. Armbian Linux”

And compare it to how Fedora 37 runs on the Raspberry Pi 4

Then we ask ourselves and asked before, is it not better to install Fedora on the Orange Pi 5 than on the Raspberry Pi 4?

  • Fedora supports UEFI, which is fairly generic.
  • Then you need the right overlays for the kernel.
  • These instructions are probably as good as it gets:

  • Fedora is after boot and also the kernel pretty generic linux software.

This has let us conclude, that it is not a big step to install Fedora on a Orange Pi 5.

  • But this was our conclusion before we had knowledge about the issues of the Orange Pi 5 with Armbian:

  • Wifi works only with selected adapters
  • touch works with the official Orange touch display, but only in landscape mode
  • there are issues with certain HDMI monitors
  • reviews show mainly games, and hardly other applications
  • there are other issues about this and that
  • Is the Armbian community not many a community of coders?
  • The installation of Fedora on a standart x86 might be easy.
  • But the Orange Pi 5 is an ARM based SBC, it is also possible to install Fedora on ARM based systems, but is it as straight forward with all the drivers and peripherals?
  • Will the issues the device has running Armbian not also be there in Fedora?
  • So if you want to install Fedora on the Orange Pi 5, go for it.
  • But will the result not be another issue report about what does not work with the Orange Pi 5 and Fedora?
