How does Garmin and Apple calculate resting heart rate?

Unfortunately, we cannot find exactly the formula and the details how Apple does their resting heart rate calculations. Both Apple and Garmin do not publish the exact formula and the parameters for their calculations. If we have open source hard and software, we have this data and these parameters. This makes those devices more suitable for scientific purposes.

We do not know of any reviews of Rob ter Horst or DC Rainmaker about topics as this one. Is this because it could lower the sales rates of these devices? If so, are they objective reviewers who tell us the truth?
